The Speculative Gaze

Timeframe: 2014–2020

This exhibition presented a view of speculative design not as an abstract thought experiment or the production of future visions but as an embodied, material and social practice that enables us to glimpse previously unseen possibilities and translate these into shared spaces of wonder and concern. Bringing together work produced by Cally Gatehouse in the course of 5 years of doctoral study, it features dysfunctional wifi networks, haunted transcripts, camp machines, idiotic figures, drunken screens, absent police officers, encounters with evangelists, and wearable data analysis. Drawing on the work of Donna Haraway and Karen Barad, it proposes speculative design practices as a diffractive form of research that entangles with the world in order to make a difference.
